Many bike Es had troubles with their seat clamps. But it is there as an option! So it is technically a 42 speed. There is no derailleur, so you have to change the gear manually. but a previous owner swapped out the cranks and added another chainring at the front. The rear wheel has 7 speeds on a cassette externally, but also 3 speeds INSIDE the rear hub (SRAM Dual Drive) and that whole system works: giving you 21 speeds.
